Started my pupilage today at my mentor's firm, Archilex. The firm's having two disputes going to trial and therefore things are pretty busy. Today's just a warm-up with me getting up to speed on the facts and correspondence of one trial which already has 4 binders of court documents, 6 binders of correspondence and a thick stack of expert witness opinions. Managed to skim through the court documents and get some sense of what's going on, but it'll take some time for things to really sink in.
Now I know what they mean by the technicalities involved in construction cases. The law is not that difficult here but the technical aspects of construction involved are mind-boggling.
And there's also the other trial. Luckily the arrows have yet to start flying.
Conclusion after Day One: I am still unconvinced that this is the career for me.
At least the partners are nice enough to not overwhelm me on Day One.
Can't help but feel tired after a whole day of reading so many documents. But at least I had fun doing research on a certain matter for one of the partners.
Perhaps I should have joined my friends at Khattar Wong for the company (it will of course be easier with so many friends around to help instead of being the only pupil and therefore having no one to turn to) But too late for this now. At least my mentor is still patient and easy on me. Just hope that it's not that bad when the fecal matter hits that angled-plane-that-generates-wind-current-when-rotated.
