NUS Centennial Dinner

Tonight marked the second time my huqin sextet arrangements were performed publicly, in a setting that was more appropriate for such chamber music. At the cocktail reception before the dinner, we were to play for 45 minutes in front of the VVIPs.

Play we did, although heard or not is a different story.

It was a noisy function room as the VVIPs interacted with each other, paying scarce attention to what we were doing. In fact, we could hardly hear ourselves. If only we had condenser mikes, but they only provided unidirectional ones which would make things worse had we used them.

At least Dr Tony Tan played the nice guy by actually coming over to chat with us and complimenting our playing, and we did get applause in the end when SM Goh turned to leave the area and then the people in the room noticed that we were there and playing some music.

Oh well, at least we played despite the numerous problems we faced prior to the performance. (Get well soon, Christine, and many thanks to Kevin for helping us deal with the many admin and technical hiccups along the way.)

And at last we have a full 30 minute repertoire for the sextet to perform at any engagement... although the piano requirement is still a potentially big problem...
