OH MY GOD!!! THEY KILLED PROFESSOR X!!! And they've killed off Cyclops and Jean Gray as well! What exactly were they thinking, killing off the central characters, especially the key team members of the X-men? Even if this was to make way for newer characters, the X-men series is just not the same without Professor X.
And supposedly Magneto and Mystique are now human again, although more or less we can expect this state of things to be merely temporary. Without Professor X and Magneto, we can call it 'X-Men: The Next Generation' since they are the 2 essential characters integral to the original series. So why kill Professor X? Is he going to be resurrected later somehow? Without him, it just doesn't feel right. Of course this was seriously an unexpected plot twist, but now that he's gone the story seems so unbalanced.
X-Men III at times really feels like one long trailer rather than a movie. Characters appear briefly and then get pushed into the background (although the same treatment was present in X-Men II, this 'cotton candy' style of introducing new characters to be developed further in future sequels feels more pronounced in this episode) The charismatic Beast finally makes his debut in the series, although his introduction seems more like window dressing than anything else since we see him talk a bit and the next thing you know he's fighting and then the movie's over. At least he didn't die like some other mutants whose screen time was like 2 minutes in total; but will we see more of him in the future?
Similarly, Angel's role in this movie is more of 'eye candy' since we only see him briefly in flight like the legendary Icarus and nothing more.
And what happened to Nightcrawler from X-Men II?
All this points to an X-Men IV but hopefully there will be more story and character development in the next sequel. X-Men III feels like a sneak preview teaser for X-Men IV rather than a movie in itself. Although it may be boring and slow to flesh out characters like in the first X-Men movie, with X-Men III being slightly less than 2 hours I think more could have been put into the film without having to save it for X-Men IV.
And with Professor X and Cyclops gone while Magneto remains very much alive, just where is this series going?
