Tonight was technically the last MAF for HJC, since officially HJC will cease to exist in name from next year. Although the tradition of MAF will continue as alleged by the current Principal of HJC, some people still felt that tonight was the last MAF.
After this year HJC will no longer exist. The distinctive red arrows will be lost along with the traditional meaning of the term "Hwa Chongnian".
Perhaps there is good reason to be sad because of this, although this MAF was not as packed as the MAFs of past. But I felt nothing, only a numbness within. Perhaps at last I have accepted the fact that it all doesn't matter, or perhaps I have realised that such is life.
Change is inevitable. Such are the vissicitudes of life. Perhaps it was planned all along that HJC will eventually merge with TCHS; no matter what there is nothing we can do about it. This has not been the first time that a school has ceased to exist in Singapore.
HJC has seen many changes in her history from the changes in location, changes in leadership, changes in student background to the changes in faculties. Does all these make HJC less "Hwa Chong"?
The name may be important, but most important of all should be the spirit.
HJC may no longer exist in name, but the true essence of HJC is her spirit, that burning flame of Hwa Chong that defines what it means to be a Hwa Chongnian.
Keep the fire going. And that is the Hwa Chong spirit.
